Cricket has gained interest among individuals during the 21st century. The Afghanistan Cricket Board was set up in 1995 & became an affiliate nation member of ICC in 2001. After playing competitive cricket for over a decade, the ICC granted them Test status in 2017.

However, the tense political grounds & the lack of international facilities kept the international teams at bay to play their away games in Afghanistan. The Afghan team has their home grounds in Kabul, Khost & Kandahar.

But they opted for secondary grounds in India & UAE to play their games. Sharjah & Abu Dhabi in UAE, Dehradun, Greater Noida & Lucknow in India become their secondary home grounds to play against opponents.

After becoming a Test nation, Afghanistan played its first-ever Test match against India in Bangalore in a one-off friendly series in 2018. They lost the match but went on to play the series against Ireland & Bangladesh, where they beat both teams on their respective home turf and emerged as a lethal unit in the cricket fraternity.

The nation got its limelight through 3 incredible young spinning trio (Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi & Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman) who participated in various global leagues, including IPL, BBL, and Vitality Blast.

They gained exposure by playing across different conditions spanning multiple cricketing regions. It has made the opponent teams play cautiously, as they can be party poopers during ICC events. With the mystery spin trio, teams struggled for some time, but there wasn't enough support from their batting counterparts as they gave away their wickets.

To make things even worse, the political issues & natural disasters have hampered their preparations. To address this issue and make them perform well at global ICC events, the renowned English middle order batter - Jonathan Trott took over the regime as Head Coach for the Afghanistan Cricket Team.

Under his guidance, the team received immense success & got massive laurels to give their fellow compatriots a tinge of joy despite the tough moments that they were going through. The teams also include many famous Afghan cricket players like Rashid Khan, Naveen Ul Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, Ibrahim Zadran, Azmattulah Omarzai, Fazal Haq Farooqi, etc.

With loads of hope, they entered the ICC WC 2023 tournament and lost their first 2 games. But the third game is where they set the tone. Posting 284 runs on board on a great batting surface at Delhi, people thought it'd be a walk in the park for England.

But the Afghan spinners ripped apart the English team by picking constant wickets and registered their 2nd win in World Cup events.

In their 5th game, they chased down the target of 285 on a slowish Chennai track and beat Pakistan for the first time. It didn't stop there; they went on to beat Sri Lanka & Netherlands to give them a great chance to book their berth in the knockouts.

Against Australia, they played great for their 1.5 innings by scoring 291 runs and reduced Australia to 91/7 in 18.4 overs, but one of the blinders from Maxwell in modern-day cricket snatched the victory from them. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Zadran scored a ton earlier in the day and was the first player to score a century in the World Cup.
